Engineering at the
intersection of things
Proactive Computer Engineer from the University of Manitoba (BSc, May 2025) with hands-on experience spanning full-stack development, industrial automation, embedded systems, and cloud integrations.
At Indus Automation, I spearhead custom software solutions: real-time dashboards with React + Node.js + Microsoft Graph API, an IoT app interfacing Siemens PLCs via AWS IoT Core & MQTT, and automated PDF/report generation. At New Flyer, I automated capacity planning and budget forecasting with VBA, Power BI, and SharePoint.
Passionate about building scalable, secure, data-driven systems. Recognized as Runner-Up for Co-op/IIP Student of the Year by the Faculty of Engineering.

Things I've Built
A secure, full-stack enterprise dashboard suite for Indus Automation — three integrated real-time apps covering production job tracking, design drafting workflows, and resource capacity planning. Protected by Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) with MSAL authentication; accessible only to company domain users.
Offline-first Power Apps canvas app deployed for field technicians at Indus Automation — captures multi-task workplace hazard assessments with dynamic risk scoring, PPE validation, and hazard classification. On submission, triggers a Power Automate flow that auto-generates a signed formatted PDF and routes it to the Safety Representative with zero manual intervention.
Production-deployed 6-step Power Apps wizard that replaces a paper-based service record process at Indus Automation. Captures multi-day work performed, auto-calculates Regular/Overtime/Double Time by day-of-week CBA rules, itemizes materials costs, and routes records through an identity-verified multi-approver workflow — culminating in auto-generated PDFs distributed to management and customer, with permanent SharePoint archival.
Production Power Apps canvas app for company-wide weekly timesheet entry covering regular, overtime, holiday, sick, and vacation hours — with overtime banking (FIFO, 27hr cap), mileage tracking, and copy-prior-week UX. Feeds a parent/child Power Automate flow architecture that generates per-employee Excel files and a master QuickBooks-aligned import sheet, automatically split across two companies (Indus + Break Engineering), with CPA notification on full submission.
Bench-validated a secure remote-access architecture for industrial sites on Exor MicroEdge edge gateways + Corvina Cloud as the VPN broker — encrypted browser- and app-based access to field PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA on a lifetime-included VPN licence, with no public internet exposure. Configured single-IP and CIDR endpoints, one-click RDP/VNC/SSH/HTTPS application profiles, and a three-layer parent/child org + role + per-device-policy access-control model. Comparatively evaluated Siemens SCALANCE S615 + SINEMA Remote Connect and IXON IXrouter3 as alternatives.
Designed, built, and deployed a Node.js gateway that closes three hard gaps in Indus's native Exor alarm stack — no SMS, no OAuth mailboxes, no reply-based acknowledgement. It presents as a plain SMTP endpoint to JMobile and relays messages to Twilio as SMS, runs an embedded event-driven Modbus TCP server as the alarm-detection mechanism, and drives a configurable multi-level per-alarm escalation chain across SMS, email, and Modbus bits until acknowledged. Containerized as an ARMv7 Docker image and deployed on-device via Exor's JMLauncher — no external server, hosted-gateway subscription, or inbound network access required.
Unattended Python routine that pulls historian trend data and alarm/operator-log records from a live Siemens WinCC system and writes scheduled Excel workbooks — talking plain T-SQL to SQL Server via pyodbc, which invokes the WinCC OLE DB Provider in-process through a linked server, replacing a paid third-party reporter for one customer's system. Resolves the moving archive catalog at runtime, handles dual UTC/plant-local timestamp conventions, and validated server-side TIMESTEP aggregation at ~150× data reduction. Packaged as a PyInstaller executable under Windows Task Scheduler. This delivered pipeline is real; the broader production reporter platform it feeds into is still being built out.
Custom cross-platform smartphone app (iOS & Android) for real-time remote monitoring and control of Siemens S7-1200/1500 PLCs at pump/lift stations. AWS IoT Core + MQTT, RBAC authentication, real-time dashboard, and push/email/SMS alerts.
University of Manitoba Capstone (team of 6). Sensor-driven system enabling boaters to conduct real-time bathymetric surveys — sonar + GPS data streamed to a Flutter app with Google Maps visualization, safe-route navigation, and ML-driven hazard detection.
Two-part submittal-automation tool for assembling navigable "cutsheet books" of equipment datasheets. An Excel VBA macro reads a Bill of Materials, looks up each part's datasheet from a manufacturer/part-number database folder, copies and renames it, and writes a per-row status back (found/copied, already exists, missing) so gaps can be resolved and re-run. The two halves communicate through a small JSON index file, making the Table-of-Contents columns fully dynamic — add, remove, or reorder columns and the TOC follows with no code change. A Python app merges everything into one bookmarked, hyperlinked PDF, packaged as a standalone .exe via PyInstaller.
Embedded assistive technology for deaf curlers. A handheld controller wirelessly signals sweeping commands to an LED ring on the broom — providing visual cues via ESP-NOW (peer-to-peer Wi-Fi, no router) between two ESP32 modules.
Clean, responsive e-commerce storefront for tech products with dynamic product catalogue, shopping cart, checkout flow, user account management, and product recommendations. Deployed on GitHub Pages.
Fully normalized relational database for managing music catalogues — albums, artists, songs, playlists, and user data. Features a Python CLI for complete CRUD operations and complex SQL queries. COMP 3380 Database course project.
Multi-module Excel/VBA + Power Platform automation owned end-to-end across Indus Automation and Break Engineering: the company-wide PM Sheet platform (Teams-webhook notifications, an Outlook shared-calendar engine with duplicate detection, cross-sheet data integrity, and a custom in-cell date picker), a FAT/SAT IO check-sheet generator that auto-fills Siemens and Allen-Bradley formats from AutoCAD IO exports, a table-driven fee-proposal generator reading live from Excel fee calculators and Outlook contacts, and a 5,500+-part inventory app with QuickBooks sync and cross-field smart search. Also includes New Flyer's capacity-planning and budget-forecasting workbooks.
Full Resume
Sukhmeet Singh Hora, EIT
Computer Engineer (BSc, University of Manitoba, 2025) with 1 year of professional software development experience since graduation, building on 16 months of full-time engineering co-op experience. Builds across the full stack — React, Node.js, Express, MongoDB, and SQL on the web side; C/C++, Python, MQTT, and AWS IoT at the systems level. At Indus Automation, independently architected and deployed production web applications, Power Apps, automation tools, IoT platforms, and industrial remote-access VPN solutions as the sole software developer — comfortable owning a feature from schema design and API contract through to UI, deployment, and documentation, and equally comfortable working close to hardware when the system calls for it.
